The Kentucky Sprint Cup Race Was Not So Good
The Sprint Cup race on Saturday
night in Kentucky was boring to me. It
was not exciting at all. I knew with the
combination of a new paved track, new package (the lower downforce for the 2017
season), and tires were not going to be good.
It was more spinning and wrecking than anything else. For a second, I thought I was watching the
Daytona race again.
It started off with Ricky Stenhouse
Jr. hitting the wall early in the race way before they even made it to the
mandatory caution lap, I think on lap 25.
And then it got worse from there.
Jimmie Johnson wrecked a little later in the race. JJ got loose when Kyle Busch came under him
to cause JJ to get loose and he got into the wall. The car had endured a hard hit that kept him
from contending for a win or even a good finish. Those cars looked so evil during that
race. Some people were lucky not to
wreck or spin out.
Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney made
contact with each other when they got put in a 3 wide situation. And then after that happen with them, it was
a big wreck taking out a few more drivers out of the race. I almost forgot to mention that Joey Logano
had problems as well. He had wrecked a
few laps after JJ had wrecked. The
racing was not exciting at all in my opinion.
The race did end up being a fuel
mileage race. I do love fuel mileage
races. It is still a strategy to try to
win. It isn’t always about the fastest
cars. It is a combination of different
things to win a race. Most of the field
pitted so they did not want to take the chance to run out of fuel. The king of fuel mileage races in recent
years won the race. I am talking about
Brad Keselowski. Carl Edwards finished
in 2nd place. Carl thought he
had him. It was funny though. It was good to see Tony Stewart get a top-5
finish at the end of the race.
I just hope that the race will be
improved before they go back to the Kentucky Speedway next year. I had a feeling that the combination of the
new pavement, the new lower downforce package, and tires were not a good
combination. I do not want to see this
type of racing anymore at Kentucky Speedway.
